The tourism professionals are part of the main victims of the Madagascan crisis. The 2009 season is not totally down though.

150.000 tourists expected in 2009

Madagascan tourism has been deeply affected by the present crisis in spite of small green shots of recovery and promoting actions. Normally, the country ought to welcome 150.000 tourists this year, according to the Transition’s minister, Irène Andréas. Last year, Madagascar successfully reached 300.000 foreign tourists.

During the first semester of 2009, in spite of tour operator’s advices not to go to the Great Isle, some foreign tourists dared the odds. Their number recorded on the border though decreased by more than 40% compared to last year’s same period.

One of the main suppliers of foreign currency in Madagascar, tourism has been weakened by the economic crisis that followed the political crisis. In spite of all, the setting up of infrastructures is maintained. Until the end of this year, Madagascar should get 500 additional rooms.
