Gold rush to Antanimbary 16/06/2014 | 18:55:34

The region of Maevatanana used to be famed by its outstandingly hot weather; it is as well by the gold rush driving bold adventurers to the area called Antanimbary.

Some 186 miles away to the Northwest of the capital city, Maevatanana towers the rest of Madagascar’s other places in terms of heat with summer temperatures shooting up as high as 34 degrees. French colonists used to do as they pleased there several decades ago when it came to digging for gold. Malagasy nationals have taken over ever since, for the regions’ reserves have not gone dry yet. Paying a visit in this area happens to be a fair opportunity to sweat like never before and have an insight of the local rural gold miners’ daily life standards. A handful of miles away from Maevatanana stand their headquarters in Antanimbary, so far the largest gold producing commune of the region. Entering the town or flying over the Betsiboka river renders a fair idea of the gold miners’ daily life. They actually spend a lot of time by and in the river’s waters. Not a few score of them even decided to settle their cabin nearby, not too far from their workplace. Maevatanana can be accessed by every conceivable vehicle type with reliable cooling system in. It might however take no less than four wheel drive roadsters to expect to reach the rural outback unscathed.
