The Federation of Madagascar's Innkeepers (locally called FHORM) asks the Transitional government for an exceptional extension of the legal work suspension period

FHORM: either longer technical suspension or layoff

The slow resumption of tourist activities doesn’t reassure operators. The FHORM asks the government to give an exceptional time-out to the sector’s operators before taking on the technically laid off personnel. December 2009 is suggested, three months more than planed.

As the political crisis began to have a considerable impact on the sector in February 2009, the sharp downturn drove most of innkeepers to run business with reduced personnel only. The dropped staff ought to resume working by September.

For the FHORM, many tourist enterprises won’t be bound to re-take all their employees on in September. The Federation dreads the unavoidable economic layoff. The sector doesn’t yet find any green shots of recovery from the crisis.

Madagascar having been declared a risky destination during the first quarter of 2009, the tourist season has been seriously compromised. One hotel out of two closed, 70% of the employees have been sent in technical unemployment. Since May, the resumption has been resuming slowly. To attract the tourists, Innkeepers apply a 40% price reduction.
