30 years after the institution of the Indian Ocean Commission, Madagascar still has to find its way forward. Its economic development is still little more than a mess, whereas the other islands like Mauritius and La Reunion have taken a large enough lead to bring their industries onto the Malagasy territory and take profit from the local cheap labor. Such a synergy inside the intergovernmental organization does not hold its promises of welfare as well as expected, for the targeted markets prove tight and uneasy. Madagascar still have an asset up its sleeve though: its potential as regional barn potentially able to see to the Indian Ocean's islands food security. [See]

Two journalists from the daily newspaper “Madagascar Matin” have been kept in custody by police forces since the evening of July 21st. The reaction from associations and from the Union of Malagasy journalists was almost immediate. An emergency meeting was scheduled on July 22nd and journalists right away proceeded to go down the streets. [See]

The history of Ilakaka, the southern homesteaders' town crossed by the National Road 7, a few miles away from the Isalo national park, the small remote hamlet by what was merely 20 years ago called a stream, is made of the stuff of US American Far West legends. Its notoriety it owns to its primary commodity, its underground teeming with sapphires. [See]

The Malagasy ruling power intends to burn a number of rosewood logs down. The concerned stocks are supposed to be stuck down in remote areas, far away from export harbors and much too hard to be reached. But ecologic groups vividly oppose the initiative in response. [See]

This communication operation was deemed to help put up a decent profile. The President of the Republic settled the issue regarding the couple of journalists held in custody, namely by asking his Minister of State to withdraw the complaint for slandering held against Jean Luc Rahaga and Didier Ramanoelina who were meanwhile awaiting their trial and the court's verdict. Without denying tribute to Hery Rajaonarimampianina who took a stand against the imprisonment of journalists, the ruling power has given in to the rising general mobilization and to a potentially looming dangerous political capital made out this issue.
