For the presidential race expected to take place on July 24th, the Special Electoral Court found as many as 49 candidacy applications out in its mailbox. Some of them do however not match the standards and are likely to get rejected. The official starting line will be known on May 3rd.

Presidential race : no less than 49 candidacy applications in all

The first couple of days dedicated to the collection of candidacy applications by the Special Electoral Court proved somewhat as special as the court itself. Twenty applications were recieved.  The most stunning one of them belonged to former president Didier Ratsiraka. The acting president of the Upper Chamber and reliable ally to Andry Rajoelina since the year 2009’s putsch is also in for the tournament. Runner up Avoko Rakotoarijaona withdrew however at the eleventh hour. Some 49 individuals paraded before the Special Electoral Court’s registration officers although some of them will not even bother to address the completion of their application files. The required 50 millions in Ariary actually prove to be no easy hurdle to overcome to a significant number of these wanna be candidates, let alone the whole costs of one presidential propaganda campaign. Lalao Ravalomanana, the former first lady, and her application will undisputedly capture the focus during the next few days
