Agriculture revival in the Eastern part of Madagascar: FAO releases 386 000 dollars

The damages caused by the Cyclone Giovanna in February 2012 were so devastating that even until now the most vulnerable people living in the Eastern coast of Madagascar continue to be exposed to food insecurity. To this regard, the Ministry of Agriculture, on behalf of the Malagasy government, requested the assistance and support of FAO regarding the implementation of a new project tending to revive agricultural production. This project aims at lessening the exposure to food insecurity of the population in the following three Districts: Moramanga, Vatomandry and Brickaville.

To this end, the signature of an agreement regarding FAO’s technical and financial support to the Malagasy government in the agriculture revival project was performed at the office of the Minister of Agriculture at Anosy on September 24. It was reported during the signature ceremony that the funds released by FAO for this project amounts to 386 000 dollars. The support of FAO to this project is divided in three categories: the first consists in strengthening the capacity of Reducing Risk and Disaster of the regional officials; the second tends to revive the agricultural and horticultural systems in the urban and suburban areas; and the last one consists of educating children about the importance of agriculture by creating school gardens.
