Environment protection: Additional funds of 4.5 million Euros for the Foundation FPABM

The release of the 4.5 million Euros grant for the benefit of the Foundation for Protected Areas and Biodiversity of Madagascar, known as FPABM, was made possible following the signature of the agreement between the German Cooperation, KFW, the Ministry of Finance and Budget and the Ministry of Environment and Forest, which are directly involved in the protection of the environment.

The grant will be paid to the capital of the Foundation, bringing the amount of that capital to US $40 million. According to the explanations of the Minister of Finance, Rajaonarimampianina Hery, Germany has always attached great importance to the Malagasy biodiversity because the German Government and the Malagasy government have already signed a biodiversity debt relief amounting to 8.5 million Euros in 2003.

The fund is placed in the Foundation which is an institution of public utility and an efficient tool of financial sustainability for protected areas in Madagascar. With a management mandate system, the Foundation is able to secure 20-year financing requirements of five national parks, namely Andringitra, Ankarafantsika, Marojejy, Kirindy-Mite, and Tsimanampetsotsa. With the signing of this new financial grant, the participation of the German government in the financial resources of the Foundation amounts to 14.725.000 Euros, of which 6.225.000 Euros in capital, making Germany one of the most major donors of the Foundation.
