It is no dream place where people would like to live, but a little more than a thousand people have chosen to settle there out of necessity. " La Reunion kely " is a special "district" at the center of the capital , Antananarivo, standing along dump and the major Andriantany sewer. Poverty is their everyday environment, but they have no choice.

Living and dying in ” la Reunion kely “

Clarisse has been living there since 2010 mainly because of the crisis that has been rocking the country . She previously used to work for a food processing company which went bankrupt in mid-2009, put the key under the door. After a few months of problems spent fleeing unpaid rents, she was compelled to hit the road with her man, also unemployed , and their three children. Clarisse is part of the 500 newcomers which have been enlarging the population of ” La Reunion kely” since the beginning of the crisis in 2009. The area’s veterans who have been stuck down there for ten years have noticed a concerning fact. One death per month is regularly recorded in ” La Reunion kely .” This is logical, considering the precariousness of living conditions. Not even public closets are to be seen anywhere near the whole area. People have to live in tents or makeshift shelters wrought of basic materials. Most of the inhabitants of ” La Reunion kely ” make a living from the sale of items recovered from trash bins. This is barely enough to keep on breathing. But, of course, insecurity largely prevails. Diarrhea and typhoid fever are the most common diseases. ” La Reunion kely ” has been cleansed some time ago. The place has been completely cleansed for the latest time in 2004, but since 2008 , the course of history took a different turn again. In 2009, there were about 500 people in “La Reunion kely .” Today they are just over 200 families or 1000 people, including scores of children.
