The Malagasy authorities intend to create new protected areas in 2007 and 2008 to achieve the goals of a surface of 6 million hectares.

One million hectares of protected areas to be created every year.

Protected areas and natural parks should constitute a new asset for Malagasy tourism. The better the sites are protected, more tourists will find pleasure in visiting. From now to 2008, Madagascar should increase the surface of its protected areas to 6 million hectares. That is at least what the president of the Republic annonced during the summit on durable development in Durban in 2004. Since 2005, more than 900.000 hectares of new protected areas were established. In 2006, 1.000.000 of hectares were born. And for the years 2007 and 2008, more than 2 million hectares should be identified to buckle the loop.
