Madagascar intends to reestablish its previous export target of 50000 tons of peas.

Peas for export are back in business.

PSDR supports this renewed development of an old resource. Madagascar already has been a successful exporter of this commodity. Today we intend to restart this business. According to the EXPRESS, ?Madagascar will export 2000 tons by September of 2007. By the following year if all goes to plan, the goal will be to surpass the 50000 ton mark. This would be more than double what was exported to the United Kingdom in the 80s. Most of the production came from Morombe region, whose land is known to be particularly well suited to growing this commodity. Using newly developed seeds is what the government is counting on to succeed in this endeavor. PSDR, Project for Rural Support and Development, in collaboration with Fofifa Research center now begins a huge offensive in the Morombe area, in the commune of Befandriana to be more exact. Financed by FCRA (Competitive funding in applied research) a sub division of PSDR, FOFIFA undertook to research the problem and produce a pea resistant to the ?menameso? disease which was the principal cause of the failure of previously successful export.?
