Students on the move in Antsiranana, at least 100 arrests

The present student movement began with dissatisfaction about student bursaries. Antsiranana students requested these amounts be increased. Without these same increases Malagasy university fees cannot be met. They also demand that electricity be made available full time. The Tribune writes,?As announced, the second day of the general strike by students has been catastrophic for JIRAMA. This past Wednesday night following a series of inflammatory incidents the regional head of DIANA (Diego, Ambilobe, Nosy-Be, Ambanja) Nosy Harinony Jérôme Christophe appeared on the local TV station right after the 7.30PM Malagasy news. He called for calm and affirmed that police operations were underway to prevent further riots. The Express said, ?Following yesterdays student manifestation, 20 students and 7 police officers were injured. Lucien Victor Razakanirina, the Secretary of State responsible for Public Security also spoke of 104 arrests.?
