although the electoral campaign begins, many candidates out the thirty three ones running for the presidency still happen to remain widely unknown. And the campaign`s first week saw no major improvement for them. But who are they anyway?

the year 2013`S presidential race’s outsiders

The opportunity to run a presidential election happens to be granted by Madagascar`s political system even to complete political aliens with no party, no supporters and no endless financial resources. Unfortunately for them, electoral battles can hardly ever be conquered by ideas and social projects on their own. In an electoral tournament too, victory belongs to the one with the biggest shot.
Being an outsider in a presidential election does not make feel at ease, for a formal introduction is compulsory in addition to the standard campaign. The favorites are however in a much more comfortable position: free concert shows, popular celebrations, a heap of casual electoral promises and that`s it.

RABEHARISON Roland Dieu Donné aka VAHÖMBEY used to be known as an artist, a singer. Yet he was the first to reveal his candidacy in his way, which did not go down unpunished. The determined philosopher actually demonstrated in front the palace of Ambohitsorohitra, claiming that he would make Madagascar recover its soul.

RAKOTO Jean Pierre is a wealthy and proud farmer promising to make a leading farming power out of Madagascar. The Man with the Hat enjoys a large popularity in his native Amoron`i Mania region and increasingly captures national attention.

RANDRIAMAMPIONONA Joseph Martin, he who used to be known as “Dadafara”, a businessman trading household appliances, presents himself as a reliable man of honor longing for a new thorough foundation of Madagascar. Even the candidate Hery Rajaonarimampianina and his staff may no more play his substantial efforts to get popular down.

DOFO Mickaël Bréchard does not enjoy much more fame than his association « Mamiratra iombonan’ny Malagasy » (MIM). His very name does not happen to be an asset. No, he is no son to Colonel Brechard, whose military achievements back into the 1970`s owed him quite an unglorious reputation. The presidential candidate was rather fathered by a certain Dr. Brechard, and presents a classical electoral program based on social security,, education, security and good home governance.

TINASON Freddy is a young lawyer coming forth as Madagascar`s providential man. As “a mere matter of a coincidence”, his parti took the name OBAMA, which stands for Olom-Baovao Malagasy. His supporters already call him Freddy Obama!

RAZAFIARISON Laza is no stranger no more in Antananarivo city. The Avotra ho an’i Firenena party` secretary general has been doing what it took over the latest couple of years to put his ideas on air. He was the one arrested by the state police` special forces with much brutality in the run of an unauthorized demonstration during which he required elections from the ruling power. His impudence got rewarded with a few days long stay behind bars, much to his own liking though, for the pictures of his arrest are now being widely used as a political asset.

RATREMA William steps in as a leading figure from the education field. He draws much pride from his teaching career which extended from elementary school to university. His very wealth was built upon education. His political complete lack of experience however happens to be an asset as well as a drawback.

out of all the expatriated wanna-be-candidates, RAHARIMANANA Venance Patrick was the single one who did the right way what it took to get a candidate ticket, namely staying on home soil over the six latest months to the presidential tournament. This head of company and former car seller advocates job creation and inspires from a well known motto “Vitantsika io”, translated: yes, we can!

NOELSON William already served as Labor minister and left in many aspects a relatively good impression. Yet, he still has to get content with the outsider ‘status. His electoral staff works for the time being in the shadow the construction of a “network” out. In the second half of October, his campaign is expected to get loud and public.

LEZAVA Fleury Rabarison is being presented by the HARENA party, or Alliance for National Recovery. This entrepreneur gives priority to the restoration of security as well to an enhanced governance. He would grant larger venture opportunities and a better control over the leadership at every level to citizens
