Vanilla production: 2012 is a productive year

The vanilla production of this year 2012 appears to be productive and profitable to vanilla producers in the region of SAVA. While sold at 15000 MGA last year, the kilo of ripe vanilla is sold between 30000 and 40000 MGA this year. Also, last year producers in the SAVA (Sambava, Antalaha, Vohémar, Andapa) region produced about 1050 tonnes of exportable vanilla, this year they expect to produce up to 1600 tonnes of fine quality vanilla.

Annually Madagascar produces around 4500 to 5000 tonnes of raw vanilla which ends up in approximately 1300 tonnes of processed and exportable vanilla. Thanks to its humid climate which is highly beneficial to vanilla growing, the SAVA region is holding the lead in terms of vanilla production in Madagascar, though some other Districts like Maroantsetra and Mananara Nord also produce vanilla on small-scale level.

Since 2008, the District of Mananara Nord started to produce organic vanilla. At this point, the cooperative of vanilla producers of that District, known as COPPVM, brings together 54 associations which are sponsored by the program PSDR. With an annual production capacity of 20 tonnes, organic vanilla proves to be more profitable in terms of exportation markets since the cost of its kilo usually ranges from 40000 to 60000 MGA. In order to ensure its quality as an organic product, agricultural inspectors are currently performing in-the-field controls and investigations.
