Today, in Paris, the "Friends of Madagascar" Conference made good on its promise to grant over 2 billion Euros toward restarting the economy.

Sylla brings back over 2.3 Billion Euros from Paris

Everything, (from official talks, to conferences, and meetings), was orchestrated to make the Malagasy delegation?s trip a success.
This morning, after making the rounds with most of France?s key representatives, including yesterday?s meeting at Matignon, the Malagasy delegation introduced to the major financial backers, a situation analysis which included:

  • a political assessment presented by the Prime-Minister himself;
  • an economic report delivered by Mr. Rajaonarivony, vice-prime minister in charge of Finance, and Budget;
  • a micro-economic digest presented by the Minister of Economy and Planification, Mr. Andriamparany;
  • a social assessment, presented by Mr. Andriampanjava, the Population Minister;
  • and an environmental analysis, introduced by General Rabotoarison.

This impressive series of presentations was followed, this afternoon, by other presentations made by the financial backers who were all in attendance.

In all, over 2.3 billion Euros were granted, either as donations, or as lines of credit.
This figure was far more than even the rather optimistic one announced earlier by President Ravalomanana.
According to what he said, ?we no longer need to worry about the money, now; we just need to worry about managing it intelligently?.
Let us hope that the current leadership team will indeed know how to manage such an enormous sum, already amounting to over half of the country?s debt.

In tomorrow?s edition, we will provide you with further details on the nature of the projects on which this amount will be spent.
