Rasalama is one of the first Christian martyrs of Madagascar. A temple was built in memory of his death sentence.

Ambohipotsy : the Rasalama temple

The Ambohipotsy temple is located at the end of the upper town. This area offers the most beautiful views of the plains of the capital and its immediate surroundings. Ambohipotsy temple was built at the spot where Rasalama was killed at the time of Queen Ranavalona I. Its construction began in 1863. The project manager is said to be an Englishman named William Pool. The inauguration of the temple took place a few years later, on Nov. 17, 1868, at the time of Ranavalona II. Freedom of worship was again a reality. The outskirts of the temple is a great place for walking. A few metres from the temple, one can get a complete view on the western side and on the south side of the capital.
