Employment: 60% of the Malagasy youth are underemployed

Madagascar is a country whose population is mostly composed of young people between 14 and 35. Yet, the Malagasy youth are unfortunately faced with major difficulties whenever they want to get an employment. Therefore, 60% of young Malagasy are underemployed or perform jobs that do not correspond to their degree. This situation is even worsened with the global financial crisis and, of course, the socio-political crisis affecting the country since 2009.

According to the representative of the International Labour Office (ILO) in Madagascar, Ntsay Christian, 336 000 up to 1.250.000 formal jobs were lost in Madagascar in 2009 and 2/3 of the people who lost their jobs are all young. For that reason, the celebration of the Job Day which will be held on March 22 and 23 at the Sports Palace of Mahamasina will particularly be focused on solving the problem of youth unemployment in Madagascar, but also on how one could prioritize the employment of the Malagasy youth.

During the first day of the event, a national meeting on youth employment, initiated by the International Labour Office in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and the Ministry of Public Service, will be organized. After that meeting, the 100 participants are expected to come out with emergency solutions.
