Madagascar represented in the 10th edition of the Groix insular film festival

Madagascar will be well represented during the Groix insular film festival, taking place in the Groix, Bretagne from August 17 to 22. In fact, in addition to the projection of films on the Great Island, one Malagasy being among the member of the jury, a few Malagasy artists will also be present in the festival.

The Groix insular film festival is expecting the participation of all the islands which have been present in the precedent edition of this festival, including Madagascar, the guest of honor in 2006. Like the majority of the islands from the Caribbean Sea, the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, Madagascar will present films and documentary films depicting its culture and traditions. Among the film selected to compete during the festival is the one entitled, “Madagascar, Carnet de Voyage” which was written and directed by Bastien Dubois in 2009. This documentary film talks about the customs practiced during the “Famadihana” or the act of changing the shroud of dead bodies. More precisely, it relates the adventure of a foreigner coming from a distant country with a different culture, and discovering the local culture.

In addition to films, the festival’s organizers will also put the stress on other disciplines that could depict each island’s culture, namely traditional music and dances as well as oral literature. So for Madagascar, a bunch of artists playing traditional music will be among the Malagasy delegation. Some of these artists include Damily, a Tsapiky musician, Zolobe, the author of the first street festival of Madagascar, and Bekoto, the member and co-founder of the Mahaelo band.
