The capital of Madagascar, Antananarivo, celebrates its 400th anniversary this year

Within the framework of the 400thanniversary of the establishment of Antananarivo as the capital of Madagascar, ORTANA, the Analamanga’s regional office of tourism, is organizing, throughout this month, various events focusing on themes that trace the town’s past. These events include photo expositions portraying Antananarivo throughout its existence, initiation to traditional games such as “Fanorona” and “Katro”, initiation to plastic art, circus, traditional story-telling sessions for kids, and an organized visit of Andohalo and its surroundings.

The main purpose of ORTANA in organizing such events is to celebrate that anniversary in dignity which, it is to be noted, coincide with the 50th anniversary of the nation’s Independence Day. Besides, ORTANA also wants Antananarivo dwellers to get to know the history of the place they live in. “Many people, especially those dwelling in Antananarivo, might not know that people already lived here 4 centuries ago. In spite of that, Antananarivo possesses many valuable historical and cultural richnesses that are still exploitable”, asserted Lalaina Rajoelimanana, a member of ORTANA.

On this period of the year, ORTANA’s events are highly recommended for children and young people who have just left school, and are now looking for leisure activities to spend holiday time. However, the events are also open for everyone wishing to have fun and spend to good times while learning more about the history and culture of Antananarivo.
