Taxi drivers are plagued by a lack of the lanterns sold by city hall in the capital and the continually increasing price of gasoline. It?s enough to force them out of business.

Trouble for the TAXI industry.

No wonder the taxi drivers are worried. According to the GAZETTE, ?Pretty soon a good number of our taxi drivers will find themselves out of work if the ever increasing problems are not brought under control. The city will not let them work without these lanterns but yet even those who are newly arrived in this marketplace cannot work if the city cannot provide the lanterns they need. It appears the CUA has stopped the sale of these lanterns for an as yet to be determined length of time.

So while the new drivers cannot work for lack of the lantern, there are also a number of existing drives who have lost their own and cannot replace them. It does not help that the legitimate price of 25,000 Ariary has soared to an inflationary 100,000 Ariary on the black market. There is even a growing local production of these lanterns selling for the low price of only 16,000 Ariary that are almost indistinguishable from the real thing. The constant increase in gas prices affects all drivers.”
