Madagascar longing for a comeback among the French speaking countries

Madagascar wants to recover its position in the family of French speaking countries. The country' second official language might get through in the education system and in the administration, remains however very far from being spoken on a daily basis by every single Madagascan. The number computed and reported by Clement Duhaime, Administrator of the international organization of the French speaking countries, is surprisingly low: only 1.5 million out of the Malagasy population read, write and speak French at all. In other words, the language of Moliere actually scores no better than any other foreign language in the education as a matter of fact. Still, the Malagasy President, as a good French-speaking diplomat, expects the Great Isle to be welcome at the summit of the OIF in 2016. Read More »

Reporter, good God, what a job!

Latest account: 1150 journalists for 22 million people! Are there enough of them? Should the focus rather lay on quality than on numbers? The new media landscape of Madagascar is by now on the making, first of all through the assignment of the valuable press card, then, through the erection of a new leading bureau to the order of journalists, and then through the scheduled draft of a new Code of Communication. But how do the concerned journalists actually assess their own profession? Read More »

Swarms of locusts bring a wind of panic with them over the City of the Thousands

They have been framed for several major offenses at a time in Antananarivo: unauthorized gathering, desecration of national State sovereignty, coercition to jeopardize State food security, terrorism… a sharp and colorful sense of humor proved to be the single back to back reaction to the invasion of swarms of locusts on that day. Later on, the FAO and the local ministry for agriculture jointly sustained in a common speech that this invasion of Antananarivo was no evidence of any collapse of the long term fight against locusts at all, and that control is no longer to be recovered but over a mere percent of the infected areas. The “free education for all concept” sold to pupils’ parents

On a background of unceasing social tension, public primary school teachers, whose wages happened to be paid by the pupils' parents, put demands forth, which are nowhere near to be met someday. The national education minister said to be not able to afford to do so. So what to do with some 65 000 teachers frustrated by their insignificant salaries, and impoverished parents no longer able or willing to pay in the state' stead? There is apparently nothing of any use to do... except pointing at an alleged politically motivated scheme, as per usual. Read More »

B class: an incurable disease for Air Madagascar airlines, is it not?

Its employees proceeded to choke their company in order to spare it a foregone demise. Call this original social movement Insane, incomprehensible, desperate, unconscious, just run out of qualifiers in the process, whatever... the movement tackled by the Air Madagascar airline company's employees' union actually materializes a loud protest against developments perceived as an injustice, a complain which frames France for an alleged maneuver expecting to lead to a solid grip on every single flight ever linking Madagascar to Europe. Air Madagascar airlines: the court ultimately dejects its desperate claim

Some of the Air Madagascar national airline company's employees mobilized and hindered planes from a French airline company to land in Antananarivo city. Air Madagascar resorted to every available legal means and finally drew the movement to an end. The unions were keen on putting France under pressure, framing it for allegedly coercing the European aviation institutions to relegate the airline company into the European aviation's much inconvenient B appendix. The court made its decision, and denied the striking employees the right to proceed with any attempt to cut the inflow of international flights from Europe, and supported the airline company's led initiative to compel thirty employees to see to the resumption of normal operations.
