The Malagasy political class is mourning Jacques Sylla, former president of the national assembly and former Prime minister of the years 2000. The man has had an interesting career, filled with success and controversies.

Jacques Sylla, a major political figure of the years 2000 has passed away

For having been significantly dented by health problems, allegedly cancer, Jacques Sylla was the shadow of his former self in his life’s latest months. White hair and slim shape has turned a strong bold man into a flawed old hag. Jaques Sylla’s last political show was the power transfer ceremony with the president of the late transitional Convention Mamy Rakotoarivelo. Former deputy Boniface Zakahely never thought to have produced a prophecy when spitting offending statements at the national assembly’s former president. The end of the final countdown was nearly predictable for Jacques Sylla.

This famous politician had been a cause for mixed feelings shared between admiration for the state politician, and contempt for the “political rat” swaying to be in the good wagon.  So is the evidence that Madagascans keep on handling politics in a passionate manner.  One can, consequently, like or despise late Jacques Sylla. The Malagasy wisdom’s command not to have feud with someone dead has, somehow, not always been observed.

The politician was very likely to be entitled to contempt to death from a large part of Madagascans on March 14th, 2009. On this day, Jacques Sylla came on the place of May 13th, made his support for Andry Rajoelina public, and called upon the elected president Marc Ravalomanana’s resignation. The crowd warmly applauded him when he made the TGV’s V sign with the hand while pretending to mean something else through it: “I have a couple of things to say “.

Marc Ravalomanana’s partisans did certainly not appreciate Jacques Sylla’s “betrayal”. The situation was even more embarrassing since the president of the national assembly was actually among the regime negotiators supposed to argue with the putsch makers. He advised the Republic’s President not to make for Ambohimanambola for security concerns since Andry Rajoelina came with score of musclemen.

When negotiations broke down, Jaques Sylla swayed side. He has, ever since, become one of the transitional junta’s dears. The lawyer did not plead for the preservation of the national assembly, eliminated by Andry Rajoelina. He has been working in his office located in Tsimbazaza to the end, insuring on going business, had there been anything else to do in the” palace of democracy “.

Ambition and treason are, rightly or not, the words on top of the chart, when one speaks of Jacques Sylla, the lawyer who became a master in politics.  The whole political class indiscriminately paid a last visit to his body in ” Little Saint Marie”, his home in Antaninandro – Ampandrana. After the ceremonial condolences, the Rajoelina couple remained for few hours long beside the Sylla family. Could a political significance be drawn out of it, the likely conclusion is that it was Jacques Sylla’s last political family.
