Kidney disease: 1.000 to 1.400 people a year need dialysis

Madagascar is among the countries that have a relatively high rate of people suffering from kidney disease for it currently has about 200.000 people suffering from this disease. Indeed, 1.000 to 1.400 people are reported to have kidney trouble in Madagascar and, therefore, need to resort to dialysis. Unfortunately, kidney dialysis is expensive and among the 4.000 to 7.000 people who need it badly, only 100 of them can afford it because the dialysis costs around 200.000 Ariary per session. However, one patient must perform a dialysis three times a week, which is the equivalent of an expense of 600 000 Ariary per week.

In addition, for the case of Madagascar, the person suffering from kidney disease must perform dialysis for the rest of his life because the country cannot yet resort to kidney transplant mainly due to lack of financial means and proper equipments and because Madagascar has very few renowned nephrologists and biologists who can perform the required operations. Indeed, those affected by this disease are condemned to die for lack of dialysis, and transplantation remains the only way to recovery. It is precisely for this reason that Malagasy nephrologists made serious requests of financial support from the Malagasy government so that the latter could provide major hospitals in Madagascar with appropriate equipments required for these operations.
