The Transition's Convention, once put once in place, will be assessing the law of amnesty previously evoked in the political agreements signed in Maputo.

Mamy Rakotoarivelo: The law of amnesty, a priority for the Transition’s Convention

Mamy Rakotoarivelo, former parliamentarian from Marc Ravalomanana’s party in the capital city, and present President of the Transition’s Convention, displayed a certain determination to move forward. He has already made for to the National Assembly’s office to meet the former president of the Lower Chamber, Jacques Sylla, to address power transfer.

According to Mamy Rakotoarivelo, the adoption of an amnesty law concerning political cases in Madagascar since 2002 is a priority. The Maputo agreements included this principle in view of the restoration of a forgiveness and peace climate in the Great Isle after two devastating political crises in seven years.

All of the actors of the crisis know that this programmed amnesty also aims at granting renewed “electoral virginity” to politicians previously condemned by Justice, in view of the next elections. The stake is the possibility to run the 2010 presidential elections. The election, supposed and expected to pledge genuine political stability to the Great Isle will be taking place earlier than planned, probably during the second quarter of the next year.

This transitional Convention’s President led intention to speed up the adoption of the amnesty law is not fully favourably considered though. Some partisans of Rajoelina are forecasting the way to accelerate Marc Ravalomanana’s return home.
