July 24th 2013 was basically supposed to be a day of election of Madagascar's next democratic President, more than five years after the putsch directed against the latest one. But it is not. This day will eventually get down into history as Laza Razafiarison's first day in custody, the presidential candidate's retribution for having required elections to be cast and for having demonstrated on the street against the transitional ruling power.

presidential candidate Laza Razafiarison rewarded with custody for having challenged Andry Rajoelina and his army

Laza Razafiarison, challenger into the eluding presidential race, and challenger of the illegal transitional ruling power, got introduced to the state police’s special units in the rule of art. He got dragged on the ground by his naked feet and dumped in one of their vehicles by its masked agents, although the demonstration organized by his Avotra Ho an’ny Firenena party (Salvation for the Nation) gathered mere 300 people in all in Analakely.

Violent crackdown

The completely unnecessary use of brute force without any shadow of professionalism from security forces still supportive of the transitional leader was the undisputed evidence of the lack against freedom of speech, and displays the fate entitled to anyone attempted to openly stand against the ruling power. “They were in for resisting the hard way, so we had to proceed quickly with arrests. The situation would have otherwise gone out of control” declared state police Colonel Rakotomahamina Florens. He emphasized that the security forces armed with assault rifles released no gunshot, whereas a female demonstrator wounded by a gunshot on the foot would suggest that they must have done so.

“We have tasted brutal repression. They will be man enough if they ever succeed in dismantling our struggle. We do not fear this illegitimate ruling power. The war has begun between Andry Rajoelina and Avotra Ho an’ny Firenena!” declared Emile Razafimanantany, a Avotra Ho an’ny Firenena party’s president outraged by the humiliating conditions of capture of his presidential champion.

Avotra Ho an’ny Firenena is a small scale political party with ideas larger than life, which decided to venture into the court of big boys over the latest three years. It is not relevant enough to get entitled to one own print on the crisis settlement roadmap. It is first and foremost a component of the Opposition front, and has always been denouncing Andry Rajoelina’s illegitimacy as transitional leader, and responsibility into the island’s situation. The party advocates the simple citizen’s point mainly focusing on the daily economic fallout of the crisis, and on the violations of basic rights The latest repression’s intensity would suggest that Avotra Ho an’ny Firenena must have long been in the ruling power’s sight.

a rageous speech

The demonstrations cracked down on July 22nd and 23rd were actually legitimately allowed to develop, for a presidential candidate was merely requiring presidential elections to take place, as basically pledged, on July 24th, 2013. “THere’s no other solution but the quick cast of elections. The people is starving. It does not have any need of a liar as leader. We have no need of any unelected leader over us!” emphasized Laza Razafiarison. The message must have not pleased the ruling power. Avotra Ho an’ny Firenena has been increasingly renewing direct attacks against Andry Rajoelina, as against a putsch maker deserving naught but getting overthrowned, if not worse, for causing the crisis settlement process to backfire.

Laza Razafiarison puts up the profile of a daring candidate prompting citizens to pluck up their courage and stand tall: “we, citizens and people, have no fear; we are going to save our nation. Democracy must be capitalized. Let us stand against those shutting radio and TV stations, let us reject corruption, let us remove every obstacle to this country’s development, let us reject the violations of human rights!”

Standing some yards in front of him, the ruling power’s armed forces did what it takes to silence this democratic call. Laza Razafiarison will have the occasion to mull his ideas over behind bars. The court has always been particularly severe against whoever attempted to criticize Andry Rajoelina and his clique much too loud. A mild sentence would favor appeasement and reconciliation, whereas the opposite would suggest a deterrent or a warning to the enemy. So, that’s the way the wind blows
