The SADC is the central cause for concern within the Malagasy political class. Joaquim Chissano's leadership of the mediation's joint team is being discussed. The resumption of negotiations might be quite tense. The four mobilities have each their position in relation to the SADC's involvement.

Reactions against the SADC: various feelings within mobilities

The Rajoelina mobility is angry at the SADC and attacking Joaquim Chissano. A demonstration against the mediator, the founding father of the Maputo meetings, would on its way. Banning the Mozambican former president from landing on is, however, a large political step away. The proposed visa denial to Joaquim Chissano has no chance to come true.

Anyway, the government council directed by Monja Roindefo sharply scolded the SADC. It vividly condemned the regional organization’s opposition to Andry Rajoelina’s speech at the UN General Assembly. The government is requiring apologies from the SADC and threatening to pull out from the economic community if the demand fails to be satisfied.

The reaction is more than passionate. According to Nadine Ramaroson, population minister, the Forces for Change are joining to condemn this unacceptable gesture. The predictable embarrassment undergone by Andry Rajoelina is considered as an attack against the Malagasy state’s sovereignty. According to the HAT member Harinaivo Rasamoelina, the SADC only cares about the defence of its commercial interests.

Ange Andrianarisoa from the Ratsiraka mobility has appeared far more pragmatic. “The SADC is part of the mediators, we need them if they help us to find a solution for ourselves”, he said. The former National Assembly president reminded then, that president Ratsiraka has never been keen on introducing Madagascar either in the SADC or in the COMESA in spite of many demands in this sense. “It does not matter much to us whether we remain part of the SADC or not”, he carelessly said.

Manandafy Rakotonirina from the Ravalomanana mobility recovered its vivacity to denounce the excessive reaction from the HAT and the Roindefo government. “It is primary sovereignism, merely suitable to a village!”, he stated. He is satirizing on the de facto transition’s current chief’s incapacity to act as State leaders. “We are in the globalisation era, whoever fails to follow the trend has to go back to the nineteenth century “, he added.

The Zafy mobility appears more discreet on the UN case, and does not exhilarate at the serious slap inflicted upon the authorities of the transition. Besides, the three other mobilities shout neither to the scandal nor to a non respect of national sovereignty. Andry Rajoelina has simply been neither elected nor chosen by the Malagasy people to direct the country. In short words, speech opportunity at the United Nations General Assembly has been denied to “Antananarivo city’s mayor”.

The mediators of the international Group, part of whose are the representatives of the SADC, are expected in Antananarivo on next October 03rd. The meeting between the four mobilities is supposed to resume on October 06th. It will be centered on the implementation of the Maputo agreements. The supposed government of consensus of Monja Roindefo’s alleged national unity government is recognized neither by the other mobilities nor by the mediation’s joint team.
