Sisal: decrease in the quantity of export

With the prevailing political and economic environment in Madagascar, it appears that the export of sisal recorded a negative trend. In 2011, it reached an export volume of 6,482 mt in comparison to 7432 mt in 2010, meaning 13% less than the previous year. The primary destinations were China and Morocco with 54 % and 19 %.

In addition, data provided by Wilhelm Clasen mainly show that the frequency of ships using the Ehoala port was solid with a trip per month provided by the MSC. While this service offered by the shipping company is satisfactory, the drawback of it is the lack of competition. MSC embarkation fees are significantly higher compared to the fees charged for embarkation in other ports of East Africa.

There are always rumors circulating that throughout the year 2011, some Chinese investors, collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture, were sent to explore investment opportunities. However, up to the present, it seems that no investment attempts in the Sisal or the spinning industry were so far successful.
