South of Madagascar: Hundreds of people were badly affected by torrential rains

In recent days, heavy rains have brought about extensive damages in the southern part of Madagascar. In Amboasary Sud, for example, the numbers of victims already topped 500 individuals. Presently, what is prevailing in this particular region of Madagascar is a real paradox. Generally, the southern regions of Madagascar are best known for being the victims of year-round droughts and famine.

However, early this year, torrential rains, which are particularly devastating, hit this part of the Great Island. The first victim of the bad weather was the city of Toliara. Actually, in mid-January, the Southwest Region’s capital was severely hit by flood after two days of heavy rains. The dike that protects the city from the Fierenana River was almost about to break. In recent days, the National Office of Disaster and Risk Management (BNGRC) has mobilized its team in order to help the affected population.
