While being on tour in France, the Malagasy president Hery Rajaonarimampianina carefully avoided to confront France on the issue related to the eventual return of the Scattered Islands to Madagascar.

The Malagasy and French presidents both avoid discussions about the Scattered Islands

The Express de Madagascar wrote: “Rajaonarimampianina seems to have skirted around every eventual cause for conflict in the run of his first official meeting with Hollande, actually a controversial stand regarding the matter of fact that claims for the return of the Scattered Islands to Madagascar are growing in the country.” As for the newspaper La Nation, it pointed out in an article that the Resolution 34/91 issued back on December 12th 1979 by the Unided Nations’ General Assembly “stresses the French Government to tackle on the spot negotiations with the Government of Madagascar for the restitution of the aforementioned islands which were once arbitrarily stripped from Madagascar. “The newspaper’s article also specified what comes next: “During his official stay in Paris as well as in the run the next General Assembly of the United Nations, Hery Rajaonarimampianina’s position on the status of Juan do Nova isl., the Glorioso Isl., Europa and Bassas da India will particularly be followed up, and may significantly affect his own political fate. “
