Antananarivo's interim mayor risks to lose her seat if the city cleansing problem remains unsolved for too long.

Threat on Michelle Ratsivalaka

An ultimatum of five days has first been thrown by the High Authority of the Transition to Michelle Ratsivalaka  following the observation of the excessive quantity of garbage littering the streets of Antananarivo. Andry Rajoelina’s ultimatum is two weeks old. Special operations have been launched to clean the capital, but garbage has a hard life.

The Madagascan capital city generates indeed about 200 tons of garbage per day. An only one day long delay of their collection complicates the situation for Antananarivo. Garbage piling up at the city’s street corners definitely doesn’t favour the leaders who put their grip on power last March.

Some independent sources report that Michelle Ratsivalaka is currently on the edge. A different interim mayor could be appointed within the next days. Ratsivalaka was indeed deputy mayor after the election of Rajoelina at the Council by the end of 2007. In the run of the political crisis and takeover by the young city official, Michelle Ratsivalaka has been designated to replace him. Lately interviewed by journalists, Michelle Ratsivalaka although affirmed that she remains so far in charge. Presumptions on her possible replacement though still feed the rumours.
