University of Antananarivo: the start of the new academic year is still uncertain

Until now, the courses at the University of Antananarivo for freshmen students have not started yet though the claims, precisely a small part of it, of the union of teachers (SECES) were accepted and honored by the government. Currently, freshmen students are very much worried about their future and find themselves in a very difficult and confusing situation. For instance, Fabienne, a student who is supposed to enter the university this year declared that, “From time to time, I go to the campus to ask information about the start of our courses but usually in vain. But I have to wait and be patient because it is the only university in the capital where degrees are widely recognized and where the tuitions are affordable.”

Concerning the courses of enrolled students during the academic year 2010-2011, some faculty and departments are still performing remedial classes, some already finished their classes a long time ago, while some others are still waiting for the results of the second round exams. When asked about the start of courses, neither the personnel of the university, nor the teachers themselves have no idea about the date when the new academic year will start. Besides, according to some sources, teachers are also reluctant to start the academic year because of the non availability of the operating budget for the year 2011-2012.
