The dumb green machine is rumbling again to influence the political debate in favor of its favorite mobility. The armed forces' command is having more and more meetings to confront the possible government change. The joint chief of staff, General André Ndriarijaona, is short of credibility as for the armed forces' supposed unity and neutrality.

Erection of the government: the army is putting the three mobilities under pressure

The newly promoted brigadier general, André Ndriarijaona is striving to reassure the opinion and the imposed authorities about the army’s role of ultimate wall. “Two governments, it cannot come true”, he said. The armed forces’ high commands met to address the army’s position and the measures to be implemented in face of the political situation’s evolution in Madagascar. “The army has…always…been neutral, but it worries about the decision to be emerging from Maputo could be a cause for unrests “, said general Ndriarijaona. “If it is likely to trouble public order”, neither the army nor the State Police are ever going to accept it.

The joint chief of staff is straining to keep everyone upright in the ranks, and denying that the legalistic or some other political mobility still have support within the armed forces. “Unity is paramount because division can only generate problems for the whole society “, protested general Ndriarijaona. Thereupon, he invited his brothers-in-arms to refrain from any one sided initiative. According to the joint chief of staff, “the army feels the pain undergone by the nation”.

Armed mobility

His brand new brigadier general’s stars are not enough to erase the fact that André Ndriarijaona, was one of the Colonels who headed a mutiny which significantly boosted Andry Rajoelina’s Coup in March 2009. Self proclaimed joint chief of staff shortly after, his leadership as unity maker has constantly been put to the test since he has been on end calling militaries at politicians’ service back to their barracks. He has freed detained militaries arrested together with Manandafy Rakotonirina, the legalistic Prime Minister from prison, just for a more decent detention place.

To this day, the army is ruled by those who contributed to topple a democratically elected regime.  Andry Rajoelina’s accomplices are yet still turning any political label down. Their involvement to the putsch would even have, allegedly, stemmed from a politically correct incentive: to oppose the use of the armed forces against the population. The creation of a squadron, then a special forces unit serving as an unofficial KGB style police force somewhat tarnished this propaganda. The presidential security’s “young officers” who waved some warnings towards mobilities opposed to the regime reminded the armed forces’ political color.

What about the army being the umpteenth mobility? The idea of a military board of directors has once been assessed by the top commands. A list of ministers, all of them army officers, has been prepared, could the political mobilities fail to reach an agreement about the government. According to leaks from the army’s highest circle, this military board pattern would have been proposed to Andry Rajoelina, but the president of the HAT asked for time to sort the issue out politically. In such a case, it would not be a Coup, but a reverse power transfer, could the young TGV lose it to the other mobilities. The next potential leader of the country would be no one else but the joint chief of staff, the general Ndriarijaona. Political sway is really in within the meetings of armed forces’ top commands
