Deception from Ivato on Saturday for Marc Ravalomanana´s supporters did in no way kill the expectations of a come back in time to contribute to the settlement of the political crisis. The mobilization´s tide provided a clear estimate of the exiled president´s popularity. The HAT displayed however quite a fearful face despite the usual speeches of defiance.

Marc Ravalomanana´s supporters: the HAT´s quacking boosting hopes for a come back

President Ravalomanana´s aborted return can still be held as a small victory for the dictating regime compelled to resort to every possible mean when deterrents from justice and the armed forces proved to have failed. Marc Ravalomanana and his relatives were not allowed to get on the plane, due to the warning sent to the South African airliners. Meanwhile, the dictating regime is straining to make believe that the announcement was faked. The HAT´s justice minister even hinted an arrest threat against Mamy Rakotoarivelo who spread the news.

President Ravalomanana was anyway bound to take off: “we are dealing with the latest formalities but now I´m told that we cannot take off. Such an abuse of power is unfair. I am not guilty, I did nothing wrong to my country but still I am not allowed to come home” was declared at the airport. On Saturday, February 14th, 2011, his supporters were waiting for him although the plane he was supposed to be in had been landing since four hours. The HAT´s famous security forces finally scattered them.

Why have they been waiting for so long? The expectation of a potential private jet was still there. The president´s attorney kept on feeding this rumor, as she returned from South Africa, without him: “It takes three hours by plane to reach Madagascar. An unexpected return is still to be expected. Marc Ravalomanana is definitely determined to go home”.

The dictating regime lost a couple of things in the duel: more of what´s left of its credibility and its self confidence. The criminal condemnation of Marc Ravalomanana has not been reached, and the war declaration against virtual mercenaries was simply ridiculous. The last single resort was the warning to the airliners.

Neither retaliation threats nor the rumors about trouble makers spread by the TGV´s TV channel deterred president Ravalomanana´s supporters from joining Ivato´s airport. It´s definitely a blow for a dictating power which has long been hinting that merely some hundreds of people would be supporting the ousted president inside the Magro square. The HAT´s propaganda arguing that Marc Ravalomanana would have lied to his supporters is dropping in efficiency
