By unilaterally organizing a referendum in order to get rid of agreements paving the way for a democratic transition, the Rajoelina sphere is extending the gap between Madagascar and the international community. Would the High Constitutional Court´s verdict validating the HAT´s referendum results ever change a thing to the situation? not yet a done deal

The HCC´s president pleading for international recognition

The HCC´s president is pleading for recognition of the referendum organized by the HAT in order to install a fourth Republic. “Our verdict cannot be ignored because the majority accepted the new constitution, as a first one step to the recovery of constitutional order.” stated Jean Michel Rajaonarivony.  That Ambohidahy´s institution still has any international credibilitiy left is not certain regarding a very controversial judicial management of the crisis. It was rewarded by the putsch makers, as the HCC took decisions to their liking, and consequently remained the single institution spared in the runout of the revolution.

During the publication of the HCC´s verdict concerning November 17th´s referendum results, Jean Michel Rajaonarivony addressed the nation´s situation in a general way:”the country has been in a crisis, it is hard to build up. We are on our way out of from this crisis” He argued that targets were the same, in spite of arguments, that is to say, the country´s development. To this end, he subsequently urged state officials to install the institutions as planned.

Malagasy way democracy

Quite a seldom scene, the HAT leader is teaching democracy lessons and pleads all the way for the exception allowed to Malagasy politicians violating democratic principles, by virtue of the “power related complexitiy”. “We are greeting the international community´s efforts to find a solution.” According to Jean Michel Rajaonarivony, this solution must hold the country´s parameters in account, its culture as well as its values. Malagasy people are apparently unsuited to democracy to the point of being compelled to invent a new one: “there are many ways to implement democracy”

The HCC is urging the ruling power to do what it takes to restore social peace.  The ruling power actually imposed a virtual peace climate by sending anyone straining to oppose its will behind bars and repressing any uprising movement. “The transitional government kept in control in spite of sporadic insurrectionnal movements” argued general Camille Vital, while mocking the international community´s recognition denial to Madagascar: “They recognize Ivory Coast, despite human casualties in the run out of elections. Everything was clean here”. But somehow, something must be wrong in the equation
