Security improvement is a thing; convincing the population of an imminent danger is different. The entire "spectacle" around the hand made bombs makes more gossips than shudders. The police forces are there to recall that the danger is threatening the city.

Police forces who do really care about us!

The presence of armed men in uniforms in the streets of Antananarivo is more frightening than reassuring. It is necessary to recall that those terrorist or outlaw attacks are made in this sense particular by the fact that their authors are clothed in military of police uniforms. It would be a trap to surprise the victims.

On a crossroad in the city of the one thousand, there are four or five policemen with assault rifles like machine guns to look after the security. This deterring effect is appreciated by the inhabitants and residents who feel in security. Unfortunately, some elements of the police forces exploit the citizens’ sympathy or recognition.

A friendly and cheerful greeting, some words to ask if the policeman in question knows you personally, then a query for a contribution to peace, with no control of neither papers of the vehicle nor the driver’s identity.

Nothing much scandalous because you can give the amount that you want. Hard however to say no when someone, machine gun in hand, bends on you and asks for something, no matter how friendly he is. It could be qualified as corruption or racket but no matter; it is a Madagascan, though bad tradition to pay civil servants for their services.

This cordial control might change. It is no more about marking the cool gentleman to request “coffee” from but the bad guy that could transport a bomb. The interior Security minister warned, there will be some annoyances for people in the streets. Let’s hope that there will be no abuses at the expense of defenceless citizens.
