The small island located on the East coast of Madagascar always rises much interest. Formerly paradise of the pirates who foamed the area, Sainte Marie became a truly touristic place. Some thousand pirates would have lived on the island during the 18th century according to historical testimonys’. Currently, a cemetery of pirates still testifies to this old presence.
Oddly it is on this island that the first Christian church of Madagascar was established on the initiative of European catholic missionaries. The church is still visible on the spot. It was built about 1857. Religious services are always officiated there rather regularly. In addition to the ideal moments at the ridge of the splendid beaches of the island, a short Sunday visit to the church is essential.
