General strike of teachers in primary and secondary public schools today

Teachers in primary and secondary public schools (CEG and High school) are following the steps of their counterpart of the University (SECES). Indeed, members of the union of teachers and educators of Madagascar known as SEMPAMA (Sendikan’ny Mpampianatra Mpanabe Madagasikara eto) decided to start a general strike today which will last for three days.

It is to be recalled that last week, members of SEMPAMA gave an ultimatum of 72 hours to the officials of the Ministry of Education. « The ultimatum expired last Saturday. The authorities have not yet delivered any satisfying decision, » declared Claude Raharovoatra. These SEMPAMA members have denounced bad practices inside the education’s administration. Claude Raharovoatra mentionned irregularities in the replacement process of Regional Directors of National Education (DREN), abusive posting and non payment of compensation during official exams such as CEPE and BEPC since 2010.

Teachers members of SEMPAMA have decided to suspend classes in all public institutions in the 22 regions of Madagascar starting this Monday, February 27 to reinforce their claims which are centered around the improvement of national education system. Teachers in primary and secondary public schools demand, above all, the real improvement of their working conditions. SEMPAMA currently has 26 000 members throughout Madagascar.
