Once, the track used to be a challenge to the bravest of the brave road runners. Nowadays the way leading to the Andringitra range bears but promises of a delightful journey.

On the way to the Andringitra

The six miles separating the southern central town of Ambalavao from the traveler’s destination, namely the Andringitra range, offers a US American far west like sight. The similar landscape of flat and bush covered wilderness from which lone heights protrude back and forth can be observed all the way. Making contact with the locals in itself happens to be a second to none experience. The closer travelers draw to the Andringitra range, the scarcer manned villages are going. Weekly markets in several areas constitute however the main attraction to scores of people. Villagers are ready and willing to walk several dozens of miles long to join these beloved gatherings where locally brewed rum and craftsmanship are kings. The journey is an opportunity to find out what the Great Isle’s far south has more that the US far west, namely rice fields amazingly entrenched into large rocky battlements of heights rising all around them.
