Built up several decades ago, the national road number 12 section stretching between the cities of Farafangana and Vangaindrano, in the south eastern part of Madagascar, is still in a decent enough estate to allow a mostly enjoyable trip .

The journey Farafangana – Vangaindrano: a genuine cakewalk

This road of the Great Isle’s south eastern part happens to serve a gateway into a peculiar vegetal kingdom. Travelers may experience between Farafangana and Vangaindrano what is generally expected from an exotic tropical island. Various unusual types of trees seem to parade over 55 miles on both sides of the road, as an example the Gravilias , the famous Ravinala, also called the traveler’s tree  eucalyptus , and various fruit trees growing by themselves or planted by the local population . In some places , vanilla or plantations alternate with the wild. The whole canvas makes a pleasant landscape, often with the wide sea in the background. The Indian Ocean bordering the Great Isle’s eastern coastline is magnificent when watched from a distance. Villages get scarce in this part of the island where the population is quite low compared to those of other regions. The area’s fresh winds definitely welcome travelers in a near primeval realm.
