As indicated in the FAO’s food security report, published on October 9, 868 million people are undernourished worldwide in the course of the year 2012. Although there has been a significant decrease in the number of malnourished people in the last twenty years (billion malnourished people worldwide in the period 1990-1992), the new figures reported by FAO is quite alarming given the fragile status of the current global economy.
The sub-Saharan regions demonstrate a high increase in the number of undernourished people. In fact, the number reached 234 millions in the period 2010-2012, whereas in the period 1990-1992, it was 170 millions.
As for Madagascar, which is supposed to be the granary of the Indian Ocean islands, the situation is very critical. In the period 1990-1992, the number of malnourished people in Madagascar was around 3 millions while the FAO’s current figures indicate 7 millions, which represents an increase of 147.3%. The FAO’s current figures also show that 34.7% of the 21 millions inhabitants of Madagascar are undernourished which is a serious situation, according to the MDG goals.
