As an outcome of a two days long trial non stop, and systematic violations of the defence’s rights, everything still remains as dim as at the beginning about the sad event which claimed 30 casualties. Although an ordinary criminal court condemned the ousted president Marc Ravalomanana, this tragedy’s real issues have not been addressed in order to prevent it from happening again.

Deadly shoot out in Ambohitsorohitra : real issues overlooked

August 10th 1991’st tragedy was re-enacted with different actors on February 07th 2009. After 18 years, politicians longing for ceasing power once again abused the crowds and lead mobs to assault the presidential palace. In 2009, mobs were led to do so by a street government’s chief, as the self proclaimed chief of state ordered him to assault the palace. He was allegedly allowed to order such a thing in quality of Antananarivo’s mayor, as the building is part of the city’s belongings.
The mother of all questions is: are crowds allowed to enter a presidential palace and empower an illegal Prime Minister? They seemingly are. The court has never addressed the putsch’s authors’ responsibilities in the action, first attempt of which failed. Andry Rajoelina reiterated that demonstrations were on their way to conquer a building, tenant of which was absent, as ordered by the self proclaimed High Authority of Transition’s leader.
The palace’s defence is an equally big issue. Supporters of Antananarivo’s former mayor had set the national TV and radio channels’ building, the MBS radio and TV channel’s building and some houses belonging to empowered figures by that time. Shouldn’t the worst be expected when they are nearing Ambohitsorohitra?
Shots replied to a charge of the demonstrators’ first ranks launched on the gate located 6 yards away. As people were fleeing, one man’s voice was clearly heard ordering: “don’t let them walk back, they must move forward”, few weeks later, the voice’s owner became the victims’ families’ spokesman. Anyway, the court’s verdict ruled out the purposed provocation aimed at targeting an acting president’s reputation”.
Marc Ravalomanana appeared rather confident and convinced of being totally innocent in February 07th’s case, as he required an international investigation. He said that the palace’s gunfire were nothing but warning shots. Militaries on duty reported 18 bullets stemming from the palace by that time. Multiple snipers located on top of the surrounding buildings were clearly reported by some witnesses. An Andry Rajoelina crying like a baby announced a genuine ambush deliberately targeting lives.
According to the verdict, only a couple of shooters, state policemen Fikisy and Ikotokely, broke ranks on no account and shoot demonstrators down. The victims’ attorneys are holding these criminals as having acted on their own, without any real pressure”. These officers supposed to have given orders have been condemned to a couple of years with reprieve behind bars. Other militaries who argued to have refrained from deliberately shooting have been released on doubt.
The court’s verdict is therefore condemning both of these militaries, President Ravalomanana and the general Raoelina, by then in charge of the palace’s security, to life forced labor. No one knows whether the court had been granted any proof that Marc Ravalomanana effectively ordered to shoot or not. In August 10th 1991’s case, the whole world could clearly hear admiral Ratsiraka’s voice ordering to shoot a black car and demonstrators’ legs down
