For the first time, a Malagasy student is granted a scholarship to study in one of the most prestigious physics laboratory in the world. Laza Rakotondravohitra will pursue his Doctorate study in Parrticle Physics at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). Fermilab is a specialized research laboratory in particle physics, located in Batavia, in the State of Illinois, USA.
Before joining Fermilab in August, Laza first studied at the first African school of Physics where he followed intensive training programs during three weeks on the theories and scientific experiences in physics. At the end of the program, his teachers ranked him among the best students and he was personally encouraged by the Program Director, Young-Kee Kim, and the Fermilab scientist, Christine Darve. Indeed, thanks to his intelligence and high competency, African scientists recommended Laza Rakotondravohitra to Fermilab.
Finally, Laza earned the « Fermilab Mouvement International », allowing him to pursue his study at Fermilab for three years under the supervision of Fermilab scientist, Jorge Morfin. Concerning his study in the United States, Laza stated that since «Madagascar does not have yet the appropriate infrastructure for experimental physics, I will try to use my knowledge to develop my country and will share my experience with other Malagasy students interested in the field.”
