Eric Mallet or Mr Mohair will exhibit his collection of Mohair carpets made by hand according to ancient traditions of weaving in Ampanihy, from May 21 to June 3, at AFT (Alliance Française de Tananarive) Andavamamba. Eric Mallet manufactures his carpets with a contemporary inspiration mixed with inspirations from Mahafaly culture while keeping the traditional manufacturing process, being handmade and with domestic raw materials, from wool to vegetable dyes.
For this year, Mr Mohair will highlight a new line of white shades adorned with visuals and patterns inspired by Mahafaly and Antandroy jewelry and fabrics. In the 90s, a young couple, Eric and Lova Mallet settled in Ampanihy in order to boost a carpet of fine quality that had long disappeared. After 10 years of endeavor in training traditional weavers in new techniques, the combined result of the two cultures offers us today carpets with 70 000 knots/m2, whose motives are usually inspired by « mahafaly” jewelry and fabrics, and made from vegetable dyes from native plants, collected in the surrounding bush. Each year, the Mohair couple comes in Antananarivo to show us the fruits of their labor.
