The post pentecost celebrations week was rich in action from the authorities as well as from consumers. An unexplained hindrance to the fuel supply system has drawn shortages and queuing lines in many gas stations. The HAT suspected a political destabilization attempt and consequently ordered a police investigation of oil suppliers.

Fuel issue: an artificial and temporary crisis?

Everybody was taken by surprise. Shortages in some gas stations were enough to bear psychosis. Queing lines have been popping up at gas stations which did not yet run out of fuel since the first Tuesday following the pentecost celebrations. Everyone was not served as expected. During a couple of days, Antananarivo´s people got a share of a nightmare as public transportations nearly withered. Even suburban busses could not leave for having no fuel.
The oil companies are suspected by the authorities of having provoked a virtual fuel shortage. The HAT and its paranoid policy fear a plot deemed to create social and economic unrests in the run of the SADC´s verdict in Sandton. “The state is straining to unveil the problem´s roots and punish the masterminds “.
Oil company officials have been convened and interrogated by the police´s economic department in Anosy. The investigation would determine whether the supplies had been intentionally retained or not. It may equally be held as pressure on oil suppliers willing to rise fuel prices. The six months long legal governmental grip on fuel consumming prices are actually soon over.
virtual shortage and psychosis
What on earth has happened? The first explanations provided by the Union of Madagascar´s oil suppliers (GPM) were far from convincing. The long pentecost weekend could not be this unusual shortage´s single reason. The consumption did not even reach the level of the Easter days. Some days earlier, rumors about a surprise strike of fuel suppliers appeared. The suppliers are on this account the authorities´ first suspects as companies own their own supply lines.
There is and will be no reason to fear shortage “, insured Nicolas de st-olive, in the GPM name. He conceded that gas stations did run out of fuel, and argued that the issue was being addressed. “The deliveries have been increased in order to satisfy the increasing demand “. After a couple of days of psychosis, the supply issue was settled. “So that the distribution keeps on running without problem, consumers are being called upon keeping on with their normal consumption rate”, reported the GPM.
“Consumers must not have for fear shortages, but an investigation must determine the psychosis´roots “. so read the ministry´s first reaction in response to the supply issue. The first measure was to supply these gas stations with the reserves dedicated to Antananarivo. Some 45 trucks have been mobilized to this end. “Let’s keep calm because psychosis disturbs supply lines “, preached the ministry. Antananarivo´s premium stocks would last 70 days, its normal fuel stocks, 36 days and diesel stocks 46 days.
The ministry in charge of Mines and Fuel management has for a while suspected gas stations and consequently called upon people to signal the long queues as well as gas stations refraining from selling. “We are not retainning fuel, we have not been correctly supplied for a week “, argued a gas station manager. They actually merely received 1000 liters out of the usual 2000 a day.
