In the northwestern city of Mahajanga, tensions and violence suddenly reached peeks following a students led demonstration. Security forces retaliated the very hard way for uniformed officers shot at the crowd, claiming one fatality and dozens of wounded civilians.

Mahajanga: security forces claim one student’s life

The students led demonstration was basically a protest against the expulsion of some of them from the university campus and facilities. They required the university’s leading officer to step down as a result. Their demonstration quickly turned into a violent confrontation with security forces which retaliated with gunfire. One student fell dead, dozens of other ones ended up wounded. The transitional education ministry ultimately dismissed the university’s chairman. Order returns in the city of flower by now, and university courses are deemed to come to a standstill for a month. Security forces’ action is getting sharply criticized in between. Officers declared to have responded to general stoning whereas observers and political figures pointed at a much too strong eagerness to unsheathe firearms. The drama became an opportunity to raise concerns about the uniformed services’ handling of security enforcement situations on the Great Isle
