The superior advisory council against political corruption (CSLCC) is busy putting the final touches to a new law governing political parties..

Proposed law governing political parties

One of the strong points of this proposed legislation, is that it will compel political parties to educate the population. Les Nouvelles quotes? Described as AMBITIOUS, is the preamble to this proposed law by the superior council, made up of some 30 participating political parties, to combat political corruption. Thanks to a transparency accord signed on 21 October 2003, ordinance n°90-001 which defines the basic guidelines for political parties, the proposed 37 clause legislation is characterized not only by its careful definition of what political parties can do, but also by what they should do.

No longer must political entities content themselves only with the quest for power, they must also adopt the role of educator of the public trust. Article 3 of the proposed law, calls for political parties to do more than furnish the nation with personnel for governance; via the role of the electoral process. It calls also for them to assume the responsibility of promoting civic interest and educating the people in their role as citizens capable of making informed political choices.
