Silk from Sandrandahy: A sought-after commodity in America

Silk weaving is a traditional activity that has contributed in making the rural Commune of Sandrandahy, in the district of Fandriana, well-known around the world. This activity has grown considerably since the PSDR (a program working for rural development) has provided support to associations of craftsmen called “Volasoa” and “Ezaka”, which are now becoming leaders in that specific field mainly  thanks to their efforts in improving the quality as well as the quantity of their products. As evidence to this, the silk Sandrandahy is now becoming a sought-after commodity in the United States of America.

Indeed, silk weaving has now become a permanent source of income for members of these craftsmen’s associations and at the same time a source of employment for others living in that Commune. These craftsmen have been provided with more efficient equipments by the PSDR, and today, each member owns his or her own workshop. Consequently, their production and the quality of their products have undergone major improvements as they decided to turn to foreign markets to sell them.
