Soanierana Ivongo: possessing a strong potential in hydroelectricity

Full of riches, both geographically and economically, the District of Soanierana Ivongo represents an important source of renewable energy. In fact, the watercourse of the Commune of Ambahoabe is supposed to produce up to 167 Megawatt (MGW) of hydroelectricity, as reported by engineers from the Ministry of Energy.

Such energy potential cannot be but highly beneficial to both the Analanjirofo and Antsinanana Regions. The exploitation of this new form of energy will contribute to the development of these two regions in that it will effectively reduce the cost of energy consumption. In fact, the high price of fossil fuel, traditionally used to produce electricity, caused the cost of electricity to rise.

The discovery of hydroelectricity potential in Soanierana Ivongo coincides with the implementation of the Ministry of Energy’s project of popularizing the exploitation and use of renewable sources of energy. According to Nestor Razafindroriaka, the Minister of Energy, the policy of his department aims at making an extensive promotion of renewable energy in the majority (85%) of the regions of the country. The ultimate goal is to attract potential backers to invest in renewable energy in Madagascar.
