It is the reflection of the mess of the local and national governance. « Every time political instability occurs, the forests are being plundered » explained one environment ministry’s civil servant.
For some months so far, national parks of Madagascar’s northern region have been targeted by illegal and careless exploitation. The famous Rhodes oil plant represents the looters’ holy grail, namely because of its price on the international market. The cubic meter would be dealt for nearly 3,000 Euros, sometimes even more.
Since one week, the local authorities have been striving to address the issue head on. The Masoala park, in the Northeast of the Great Isle, would have been surrounded by police forces for some days now. Illegal exploiters have been arrested according to the local authorities
Members of the police forces have even been suspected of encouraging illegal valuable wood exploitation across national parks of the country’s north. As far as he is concerned, the Analanjirofo region chief, Saina Michel, lately attested that both his signature and his authority have been usurped by illegal Rhodes oil plant exploiter.
The on-going operations should be earning the authorities much more success in mastering forest plunders in the Great Isle’s North.
