Unrests in Toamasina, robberies and hold ups on the rise

Toamasina : Four men armed with guns stole 3 million ariary

Toamasina city’s Manangazera was on latest Wednesday 23rd  the scene of a raid by 18 hours local time. Four men  without masks and AK 47 machine guns in hands raided the Liana grocery store. They beat the owner up and forced him to deliver the money. They subsequently went away with some 3 million ariaries (15,000,000 Fmg) The police forces appeared half an hour after the raid, too late to be of any use. One AK 47 machine gun left down in the outlaws’ run has, however, been recovered.

Apart from the beaten up and consequently wounded store owner, there has been no other casualty. There has been so far no further clue over the outlaws’ whereabouts. Toamasina’s population is wondering how could outlaws have got such a military arsenal from. Rickshaw drivers and passengers are also increasingly affected by attacks, particularly those travelling by night.

According to the victims and eye witnesses, the robbers were part of a motorbike riding band. As a matter of fact, rickshaw travels have been decreasing in number by night because of such an issue. Alain Mahavimbina the eastern province’s chief had, however, previously asked reporters for a low coverage for criminality in Toamasina for the sake of not scaring tourists away. Now it’s too late, large scale criminality is now a widespread opened fact in Toamasina
