Antananarivo has two tunnels both of which are of very respectable age 86 and 68 years. Apparently they are both still in relatively good shape and represent no danger but do need repairs.

Two old tunnels of Tanà.

For years now, thousands of vehicles have passed through the two tunnels in the capital. Midi writes, ?The Garbit tunnel is now 86 years of age. The Cayla tunnel which runs under Ambohijatovo peak was put into service 68 years ago. More than 55000 cars pass through the tunnels of Analakely and Ambanidia on a daily basis.? Today the two tunnels are part of local history of the capital. The author continues, ?There are obvious repairs which need to be made. One can see where the water comes through and where some of the surface materiel has dropped off as well as discoloration. Ralaimongo tunnel needs more work than the Ambanidia. While it is 18 years older than the Cayla, it obviously needs more work. It should be said both tunnels were created in the colonial times.?
